Below are descriptions of some of the state-of-the-art facilities to which CDB Center faculty members and students have access.

Biological Imaging Facility

The Biological Imaging Facility (BIF) is a 1,200 square-foot shared use facility located on the fifth floor of Hogan Hall on the Evanston Campus. BIF is a research and training facility that serves the imaging needs of life scientists.

Day-to-day management and maintenance of BIF instruments is handled by a Ph.D.-level manger. BIF houses a variety of instruments used in specimen preparation, image acquisition, image processing, and output for photonic and electron microscopic imaging. Training is provided to new users, from both within and outside the Northwestern University community, free of charge. Three training sessions are required for a user to be approved for use of any microscopy or computer equipment administered by BIF. Training is offered biweekly.

For information contact the BIF Manager, Dr. William A. Russin at (847) 491-6657 or w-russin@northwestern.edu.

Flow Cytometry Facility

The facility provides comprehensive flow cytometry and cell sorting services, including guidance, technical assistance, and equipment for investigators to utilize more complex multi-parametric, multi-laser measurements as well as cell sorting in their research.

Genomics Core Facility

The Genomics Core at the Center for Genetic Medicine is a shared resource facility that provides genomics research related services to investigators at RHLCCC, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University and external users. We provide services for gene expression profiling, SNP analysis, DNA extraction and DNA sequencing. Our goal is to facilitate the utilization of the state-of-the- art technologies in genomics research by NU and Non-NU researchers at a competitive price  in a timely fashion.

High Throughput Analysis Laboratory

The Northwestern University High Throughput Analysis Facility (HTA) is a shared, open-access resource established in 2004 on the Northwestern campus. The HTA provides academic, industrial, and private researchers with equipment and expertise for the development and execution of high throughput biological analysis and screening. The facility is fully equipped with state-of-the-art liquid handling, plate detection and automated microbial culture handling capabilities. The facility also assists researchers in developing HT nucleic acid purification and cloning protocols and develops novel automated methods to increase assay and sample preparation throughput.

Keck Biophysics Facility

The Keck Biophysics Facility, housed in the Center for Structural Biology, is an internationally unique resource for the study of the structures and interactions of biological and synthetic macromolecules. This shared research center provides access to state-of-the-art equipment, including spectroscopy, analytical and non-commerical instruments. It was created by Northwestern University's Center for Structural Biology with grants from the W.M.Keck Foundation and additional support from NIH, the Rice Foundation, and the Robert H.Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Monoclonal Antibody Facility

The Monoclonal Antibody Facility provides investigators access to the technology for the efficient creation of hybridoma cell lines and the production of monoclonal antibodies from these cell lines.

The Proteomics and Informatics Services Facility

The PSF provides access to a number of mass spectrometers optimized for use in proteomics studies. Scientists employed and affiliated with the PSF can design and conduct experimental protocols, reduce and interpret data and provide pre-experimental consultation to investigators who seek to incorporate proteomic experimental strategies into their research programs. Researchers may submit samples to the facility for protein separation, post separation processing, mass spectroscopy and data analysis. Alternatively, qualified users may schedule instrument time to analyze their own samples. The PSF also maintains close ties with investigators at UIC and other CBC member institutions (University of Chicago and Northwestern University) who specialize in Mass Spectrometry and Informatics research in order to provide opportunities for advanced collaboration, research referrals and protocol development.
