The mechanisms that function in the ubiquitination and downregulation of receptors are conserved and it appears that ubiquitin regulates multiple classes of plasma membrane proteins in yeast and animal cells. In our laboratory we take advantage of the ability to do genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology with the yeast Sacchromyces cerevisae to investigate the cellular mechanisms that control the phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and subsequent internalization of mating pheromone receptors.
