  • Mutations in segment polarity genes cause a disruption in pattern formation in each segment of the fly.
  • Are known to regulate each other’s expression
  • Gene products are believed to contribute to the specification of individual pattern elements (Bejsovec and W., 1993)
  • Eg: hh, smo, fu, ci
  • Through genetic analysi: involved in the transduction of either the Hh signal or the signal encoded by the wg gene
  • Mutations in hh, smo, fu, ci eliminate wg transcription at para-segmental borders
