neuroglia, glial cells
The major support cells of the brain. These cells are
involved in the nutrition and maintenance of the nerve
cells (e.g., provide myelin for axons, maintaining ionic
balance, clean up after cell damage or death, etc.). Some
evidence indicates that certain types of glia (esp. astrocytes)
may serve information-processing roles as well. |
