An
enzyme present in various tissues, including muscle and
red cells, that breaks down acetylcholine (a chemical
released by nerves that activates muscle contractions)
and helps to maintain proper transmission of impulses
between nerve cells and between nerve cells and muscles;
also called true cholinesterase. Measuring acetylcholinesterase
in amniotic fluid may help confirm a suspected neural
tube defect in the fetus. |
