membrane-bound organelle in the head of a sperm that is derived from the golgi apparatus; the vesicle containing enzymes that digest proteins and complex sugars in the outer coverings of an egg. Fusion of the acrosomal vesicle with the plasma membrane of the sperm (in the "acrosome reaction") exposes receptors that bind to the egg surface and is necessary for fertilization.
