One
of the three primary germ layers formed in the embryo, moved into
interior by cell movements during gastrulation. In vertebrates, this
innermost layer of cells goes on to form the linings of the gut (esophagus,
stomach, intestines, rectum, colon), pharyngeal pouch derivatives
(tonsils, thyroid, thymus, parathyroid glands), lungs, liver, gall
bladder, pancreas. In amniotes, extraembryonic endoderm participates
in the formation of the allantois and yolk sac. |
