drug which is a powerful human teratogen. First synthesized
in Germany in 1954 as a new antihistamine, the drug was
found to be a safe and effective sedative. It was widely
used beginning in 1958 to relieve symptoms of morning
sickness and nausea in pregnancy (although never approved
in the US). By the 1960's the teratogenic effects of the
drug had become apparent; the most common birth defects
included severe limb abnormalities and malformed internal
