in a mammalian blastocyst, the outer superficial layer
of cells surrounding the inner cell mass. This specialized
tissue forms a trophic interface between the embryo and
mother during cleavage, and subsequently forms the embryonic
portion of the placenta upon implantation into the endometrial
epithelium of the uterine wall. A portion of cytotrophoblast
cells (near the inner cell mass) form the highly invasive
syncytiotrophoblast which penetrates into the endometrial
stroma. |
