It may be a general principle that the transciptional targets of a sinaling pathway are repressed in the absence of its signal.

Examples:

  • Ci-155 activator and Ci-75 repressor in the Hedgehog signaling pathway.
  • Suppressor of Hairless, a DNA-binding factor, has a repressive effect on single-minded (sim) transcription in the absence of Notch activity, yet mediates sim activation upon Notch signaling (Morel and Schweisguth, 2000)
